Natural catastrophes (Nat Cat) disproportionally affect Asia in terms of economic losses and casualties, which in large part could be attributed to the low insurance penetration, low catastrophe (cat) risk awareness in the region and, in comparison with Western countries, lack of effective risk transfer mechanisms of the cat risk. The Institute of Catastrophe Risk Management (ICRM) has established the Natural Catastrophe Data and Analytics Exchange (NatCatDAX) Alliance as an association of industry interest group to address the above-mentioned data and modelling gaps, through an industry-led Nat Cat data and analytics platform for Asia Pacific, starting with SE Asia. Under the Alliance, ICRM has been working with its consortium industrial partners to produce quality-assured economic and industry databases, covering exposure and loss of earthquakes, windstorms (typhoons) and flood, for selected ASEAN Member States. ICRM has now assumed the lead execution role for the ASEAN Disaster Reduction Finance and Insurance Phase 2 (ADRFI-2) Program in the Risk Assessment and Risk Financing Advisory pillars. Under ADRFI-2, assessment of Nat Cat impacts and evaluation of risk financing options will be developed for ASEAN Member States.ICRM is a multi-disciplinary catastrophe risk management research institute which develops understandings and models of risks related to natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, and floods, and non-traditional risks such as infectious diseases and terrorism.ICRM at NTU invites applications for a Research Fellow to work as a modeller in flood exposure and loss.Key Responsibilities:Developing and maintaining the ICRMs exposure and loss modelsRunning of in-house risk models, exposure and loss data collection and outreach activitiesProduce output data and reports relating to exposure and lossEstablish procedures on data quality assurance and develop documentationJob Requirements:A PhD degree in Civil Engineering or engineering in a closely relevant fieldMinimum 2 years of post-PhD degree research experience in Nat Cat risk assessmentFamiliarity with data and models, and software used in exposure and loss modellingDemonstrated competency in programming languages, such as Matlab, R, or Python, within a GIS environmentAbility to write and speak to technical and non-technical audiences and to interact effectively with the teams involved in developmentDomain knowledge with the insurance industry would be desirableBe a self-motivated, pro-active, results-oriented professional with an ability to work with minimal supervision in dealing with data uncertaintiesGood written and verbal communication skillsStrong presentation skillsGood in articulating data characteristics and research resultsAble to work effectively as an individual and in a teamWe regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
