Job Description

BACKGROUNDArtScience Museum is the cultural institution in Singapore that explores the intersection between art, science, technology and culture. It is the cultural component of Marina Bay Sands integrated resort. Since opening in February 2011, ArtScience Museum has staged large-scale exhibitions by some of the world’s best-known artists, including Leonardo da Vinci, Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, Vincent Van Gogh and M.C. Escher. In addition, we have presented significant exhibitions that explore aspects of science, including Big Data, paleontology, marine biology, space exploration and quantum physics.The museum presents exhibitions and programmes on art and science using a combination of intellectual discussion, education, innovative exhibition design and interactive content. Featuring 21 gallery spaces totaling nearly 5000m2, the lotus-inspired building has played host to major international touring exhibitions from renowned museums and galleries, including The British Museum, the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum in London; the American Museum of Natural History, New York; Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona; the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo and many others. We also originate and produce exhibitions in-house and run a full programme of education, events, activities and learning opportunities for a wide range of audiences.JOB SCOPE Summary of Job ResponsibilitiesThe Exhibitions team at ArtScience Museum realises an ambitious programme of temporary and permanent exhibitions and artist commissions, including the production of exhibition guides and publications to accompany these events and reaches and audience of over 500,000 visitors annually.The Graphic Designer sitting within the Exhibitions team is one of the key team members, reports to the Senior Manager of Exhibitions, and is responsible for the delivery of all the visual design materials. The post holder manages primarily the graphics installation for all exhibitions opening. The Graphic Designer supports in shaping the graphic identity of each exhibition (in dialogue with Exhibitions team and the company contracted to provide Design and Build services) and will be engaged in all aspects of the design process, particularly the design of exhibition text.The post holder is required to work on several projects simultaneously with minimum supervision and will work closely with the Directors, Attractions, Business Development, Exhibitions, Programmes and Visitor Experience teams on producing graphics, texts, printed materials and other products for the museums public facing work.The Graphic Designer must be self-motivated, focused, detail-orientated and organised, as well as being creative and rigorous. The post-holder will work closely with multiple ArtScience Museum’s teams and will have working relationships with other departments within Marina Bay Sands. As such, the Graphic Designer must be a good team-worker, able to communicate and collaborate readily.Job ResponsibilitiesSummaryAct as a brand gatekeeper and is responsible for alignment of designs according to ArtScience Museum and Marina Bay Sands brand guidelinesTogether with the rest of the Exhibitions and Programmes Teams, communicate and coordinate closely on design briefs for all graphics support needed and to ensure optimal delivery of final design, maintain graphic files and correspondence as well as archiving past Exhibitions and ProgrammesAble to facilitate and lead design discussions/brainstormsAble to ideate and contribute to design conceptsWork on several projects simultaneously with minimum supervisionCo-ordinate and manage in the delivery of graphics installation/maintenance for each exhibition, working closely with Exhibition Producers and Curators and/or the Manager and business partners and or lenders as appropriateMaintain files and correspondence as well as archiving past exhibitions and programmesAssist and support any graphics related job duties as requiredFor ExhibitionsConceptualise and design presentation slides such as Travelling or Sponsorship decks for Exhibitions team, as needed.Sets the graphic direction for each exhibition, working closely with the Exhibitions team and the Design and Build company. This involves three phases of work:Phase 1: Concept Design- Research and understand the content of the exhibition, including interactives and AVs, enhancements such as programmes and new commissions, if any- Conceptualise and execute an overall graphic identity in accordance with the exhibition narrative, working closely with the Exhibitions team and the Design and Build company.- Develop a graphic hierarchy of texts, including a breakdown of each exhibition component, such as title, introduction, subtext, labels, quotes etc- Work closely with the Design and Build company’s exhibition and graphic designers to ensure designs are in accordance with the design brief, providing a cohesive visitor experience- Prepare a graphic schedule and checklist, and work closely with the Design and Build company’s designersPhase 2: Detailed Design- Monitor and ensure schedules are met and graphic identity is approved- Conceptualize and develop any additional supporting exhibition graphics needed, like directional signs, backdrops, programming workshop enhancements, if required- Manage, coordinate and approve all final artworks- Review and approve colours and materials mockup/ samples, if anyPhase 3: Construction and Maintenance- Monitor and ensure timely graphics production and delivery- Manage and monitor installation of graphics on site in collaboration with project managers- Produce graphic punch list, oversee the rectification of defects and maintenance throughout the exhibition periodFor Programmes- Liaise closely with the Programmes team on all requirements for graphic design for public programmes, workshops and education activities- Prepare onsite digital signs for any public programmes and education activities- Prepare booklets, handouts or any other printed material required for public programmes and education activities as neededFor Visitor Experience/Attractions- Liaise closely with the Visitor Experience/Attractions team on all requirements for graphic design for the public areas of the museum/MBS Attractions- Prepare signage for the public areas of the museum/MBS Attractions, as required- Support Visitor Experience in producing new signage or posters, as needed for exhibition opening weeks, public holidays, or any other special events taking place at ArtScience Museum and other MBS AttractionsFor Business Development/Senior Management- Conceptualise and design presentation slides such as Corporate, Sales, ArtScience Friends decks for Business Development team, if needed- Support and work closely with the Senior Management, including the Vice President and Directors, with presentation slides, as requiredJOB REQUIREMENTSEducationA degree in graphic design/visual communications or its equivalentExperience – essentialMinimum 5 years’ experience in graphic design for museum, gallery space, design studio or agencyMinimum 3 years’ proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (specifically in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop) and MS Office on macOS platformA well-spoken individual with strong pitching and presentation skillsMust have strong art direction, design and conceptual abilitiesAble to take creative direction and turn work around quickly to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environmentAble to work independently and be a team player at the same timeAbility to work on several projects simultaneously, efficiently, resourcefully and manage projectsAbility to make decisions and accept responsibilityExcellent organisation skills and impeccable attention to detailAbility to prepare appropriate working files for digital/print/productionExperience – desirableGood knowledge in print production and colour management skillsExperience in creating and producing in-house designed resourcesCompetenciesA keen interest in the arts and science, and a clear understanding of the work of a museumDiscipline, patience, pro-active and self-motivatedA team player with positive attitude and good interpersonal skillsYou agree that it is a condition of employment that you adhere to and abide by all rules, regulations, policies and procedures including without limitation the rules of conduct of the Company.
